Center for African Services Providing services to new immigrants, refugees and first generation Africans

ABOUT US

Coming from an origin where people lend helping hands to one another, first generation African immigrants and refugees find adjustment to their new home practically culturally challenging. The process becomes even more of a struggle when they can not be linked to any cultural relevant support. The apprehension between one’s pre-migration experiences and post-migration realities remains a contended process as newcomers envision reaching educational and economic goals with little support for cultural integration. Realizing the cultural concerns that come with settlement and integration as newcomers, a volunteer in the African community in New York City assessed the needs two years ago in 2008 to provide supports to new and struggling members of the community on their journey of making United States their home by providing cultural and responsive program linkages and services, providing consultation and guidance on the bureaucratic courses of the immigration process and strengthening the community through mutual respect and partnership.

The experiences in meeting the needs of newcomers provide the volunteer more knowledge into the plights of new African New Yorkers. Today, Center for African Services programs have expanded  to include a variety of services all of which are focus on helping new African immigrants successfully integrate into their host communities and become more financially and vocationally independent.
